I feel strongly that Caerphilly Residents would “sort” their waste into different boxes to aid recycling if they were ENCOURAGED to do so. No compulsion would be required and would not be advisable in any event.

If residents were encouraged to sort as much recyclate as possible then another “good” would result, in that those responsible residents and their children [the vast majority] would realise just how much food [and hence money] they regularly waste.

I am 66 years old and there was no food wasted in my home in Gilfach, Bargoed at all during the time when I and my four brothers and sisters were living with our parents. If we had kept a dog then it would have been a very thin dog. All that went into our “bin” was “ashes”. I know, as this was my “job” every morning before I left my home on my “paper round” at 6:45am. After my paper round I walked to and attended Lewis School Pengam from 9:00am to 4:00pm then walked home, and often delivered the South Wales Echo’s till 6:00pm. On Saturday Morning I also collected the “paper money” between 9:00 and 11:30am and then worked for the local butcher Mr. Arthur Shutte until about 5:00pm. Sunday was my “day of rest” – but only because I failed to obtain a Sunday Paper Round from Mr. Withers of 95 Gilfach Street, Gilfach, Bargoed as they were all taken.

Yours most sincerely,

Clive Payne
